april and may book review

Hi friends! I am combining my April and May book review because I didn’t read as much as I would have liked in either month. I’m just going to blame that on Covid- 19 again. In fact, that’s going to be my excuse for everything for the rest of the year.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis – I’m sure you’ve all heard of Chronicles of Narnia, seven fastasy books about 4 siblings who journey to the end of the world, fight epic battles, and meet fantastical creatures. I can’t believe that I didn’t read these books as a kid. I LOVED them. Each book was wonderful and special and I can’t wait to read them again with my kids. 5 Stars

The Girl Before by J.P. Delaney – A psychological thriller that goes back and forth between Emma, a girl from the past, and Jane, a girl from the present that live(d) in the same house. But this isn’t just any house, it’s an award winning minimalist home with hundreds of rules to follow should you decide to live there. But it’s apparent that something isn’t quite right. I was really looking forward to this book because I read Behind Her Eyes by the same author and it was SO good. This book was good but not as good as Behind Her Eyes. It had me guessing the whole way through, but I felt like the book was trying to be a little bit of everything. 4 Stars

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng – This was about two families– Mia and Pearl Warren, a free spirited black mother and her daughter and the Richardsons, a seemingly wholesome family of 5. Both these families’ lives become intertwined into a tangled web. It’s also about so much more but I’m not sure I could do the synopsis justice. This isn’t a fast-paced drama, but the characters are so compelling. The author also brings up some very interesting moral and ethical dilemmas that really force the reader to reflect on. 5 Stars

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston – I read this a long time ago but decided to pick it back up again. It’s a story about Janie, a southern black woman in the 1930s and her quest for identity and how she finds and loses love It’s also a beautiful portrait of a woman of color and how she defies expectations. It is a slow moving story but I did enjoy reading it. 3 Stars

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah – Oh my gosh I loved this book. And to think I almost gave up on it. It’s about a family (mom, dad, and daughter) that move to Alaska to live off the grid in the 1970s. The father struggles with PTSD and is abusive towards his wife. Tensions escalate between the three and change everything. It’s also very much a love story. I almost stopped reading this book because after about 150 pages it just wasn’t that compelling, but people told me to keep going and I’m SO GLAD I did. Once I got to 180 pages I was hooked and by the end of the book I was sobbing. Such a beautiful story. 5 Stars

And that’s a wrap! I’d love to hear what books you’ve read and loved lately! Happy Reading!
