Hello Earthlings! In case you didn’t know, Earth Day is this Sunday! Earth Day is especially great because it gives me a chance to teach Olivia about something that I really care about and have fun while doing it. And you know I’m always looking for a reason to do fun stuff! Here are 5 Earth Day activities for kids of all ages.

  1. Earth Day Scavenger Hunt. Make a list of things that you want your child to find and then head outdoors to see if they can spot them all! Here are some items to get you started.
    • green leaf
    • squirrel
    • twig
    • flower
    • bird
    • ant
    • dirt
    • cloud
  2. Read books about the earth/recycling. I recently bought this book to teach Olivia about the earth and why it’s so important that we take care of it. This book and this book are two other good options.
  3. Earth day craft. I’m all about fun and easy crafts and this paper plate earth is just that. Here is what you need:
    • paper plate
    • green and blue construction paper
    • glitter glue or regular glue
      • Have your little one tear the construction paper into about 1-2 inch pieces. Then have them use the glitter glue (or regular glue) to glue the pieces onto the paper plate. It doesn’t have to be exact (and it probably won’t be!) but you’ll have a cute paper earth to hang up!

earth day craft earth day world planet earth5. Help clean up! Grab a bag (and gloves if you prefer) and head to your local park, forest preserve, or even just your neighborhood and pick up trash. Small actions like this can make a big change!

6. Plant something! A tree, a flower, a garden, some veggies– it doesn’t matter, just help your child plant something and watch how excited they get when they see it start to grow!

7. Teach your children the importance of recyling! Show your children items that are recyclable and items that are trash and teach them the difference. We always recycle in our house, but Olivia doesn’t really know what that means or why we do it. This week, I plan to talk to her about why we recycle and she can help me sort through things that go in the recycling bin.

I’d love to hear the ways you teach your children to protect and learn about the earth!

XO,

Lauren
