How to Make the Perfect Charcuterie Board Appetizer

Over the summer, Eric and I went to Croatia for the first time (you can read about that here) and we loved experiencing the history, culture, and especially the food. One of the things that seemed pretty popular on all the menus there were charcuterie boards. We ordered them at every restaurant we went to and each one was more delicious and beautiful than the last.

We recently had a family party at our house and, because of our trip, I was inspired to make a charcuterie board like the ones we had in Croatia. Everyone at our family party was impressed at how professional it looked, but the secret is that it’s actually super easy to put together. Here is everything you need to make your own charcuterie board that is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

  • dried fruit and/or fresh fruit (I used dried apricots, fresh figs, and green grapes)
  • crackers + breadsticks
  • olives (I bought a mediterranean mixture)
  • fig spread (omg, I could eat this stuff with a spoon!)
  • nuts (almonds, cashews, etc)
  • hard salami
  • prosciutto
  • sopresatta (a thinly sliced salami)
  • different kinds of cheeses (I used a jarlsburg cheese dip, manchego, brie, goat cheese, and an aged bourbon infused cheddar)

You’ll need a large enough cutting board or cheese board to arrange everything on. Wooden or marble ones make the presentation so much better than just a regular ol’ cutting board. And you’ll need a few small bowls in varied sizes. Once you have those, you can just start arranging everything on the board and move things around to make it fit and still look pretty. I find that the more clustered together things are, the better it looks. Once you have everything set up then put out a few small cheese knives for people and it’s time to dig in! 🙂

Also, below are a few options for cheese boards, cheese knives, and some cute ramekins for your charcuterie board!
