Easy & Fun Valentine’s Day Craft

February 9, 2016

When I was a child, Valentine’s Day was fun because we would always have Valentine’s Day parties at school. Everyone passed out Valentines that they had deliberated over in the Wal-Mart aisle– Little Mermaid or Minnie Mouse? Always Little Mermaid. We would address them in our painstakingly bad elementary penmanship and tape a mini box of candy hearts to them to bring to class the next day. It may have been silly, but it was always fun to bring home a bag full of little treats from our classmates.

Valentine’s Day is less than a week away and although I don’t celebrate this “holiday” with as much enthusiasm as I did as a child, it is fun to partake in any day that involves flowers, candy, and love. So today, I’m doing a Valentine’s Day craft that you can make for your kids, but it’s also easy enough that they can help you with if you want to do it together. We are making felt envelopes to hold Valentines in or just for decoration.

Valentine’s Day Craft: Valentine Envelope

What you’ll need:

  • 1 yard of white felt– don’t buy the 8″x 11″ sheets because it won’t be enough, so the only other option is to buy it by the yard which was on sale at JoAnn Fabrics for $2.99/yard and you will be able to make at least 4 of these
  • 1 8″x 11″ sheet of gray felt
  • 1 8″x 11″ sheet of pink, red, or purple felt
  • craft glue OR glue gun OR needle and red, pink, or white colored thread– the thread should be a different color from the felt
  • heart shaped buttons

Start by cutting a piece of felt measuring 24 inches long and 12 inches wide.

Once you have the piece cut, take the two corners on one end of the felt and fold them in together so that they meet. Then cut the two folded pieces off. This is going to be the flap of your envelope.

Take the other end of the felt and fold it like the photo above. Now you’re going to close up the sides of the envelope. This is where you can decide to either use craft glue, a glue gun, or sew it. I chose to sew it because I liked the way the stitches looked, but it’s up to you. If you choose to sew, you’re doing a simple stitch around the outside of the pieces of felt.

stitch the sides

Once you have both sides closed up, you can work on the decorative pieces of front of the envelope. First, I sewed on a felt heart button in the top right corner as a “postage stamp.” You can glue it instead if you prefer to.

Then I took the smaller piece of felt and used chalk to outline the squiggly lines and my daughter’s nickname, Livy.

Once I cut the pieces out, I placed them where I wanted them on the front of the envelope and used my hot glue gun to secure them. Be careful, because you only need a small dab of hot glue for it to stick and so the glue doesn’t go through the other side. You can also use craft glue for this part if you don’t have a glue gun. I also added another small heart button on the envelope closure. I also realized as an afterthought that I should have added a small piece of velcro to the envelope flap so that it stays closed. Oh well!

I loved how this little Valentine’s Day craft turned out. It was fun to do, easy to make, and would be the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for any child. I can’t wait until Olivia is old enough to craft with her mama! 🙂
