Now that the 4th of July festivities are over and it’s back to regular old life, I have a fun finger painting art project for you to do with your little ones this summer. When it comes to getting messy, Eric and I are total opposites. He gets anxiety when Olivia’s hands are dirty or if she gets food on her face. He literally wipes her mouth between every bite when he feeds her. I, on the other hand, feel it’s important to let kids be kids and if that means getting a little dirty, then so be it! That’s how they learn! And I never have to worry about her clothes getting ruined because I have all® POWERCORE™ Pacs OXI and its superior cleaning and whitening power. And this art project definitely put it to the test and came out with flying colors, or whites, that is! 🙂

I love children’s art but I think it’s even better when it’s something cute enough to hang in their room or your home, so I thought I would do a finger painting name canvas. But because Olivia taste tests everything, I wanted to try making a taste safe finger paint. I played around with the recipe and came up with something that worked. Now, I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I think it turned out awesome. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Taste Safe Finger Paint:

  • Small canvas
  • painter’s tape
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 1/2 cups of water
  • food coloring
  • muffin tin or small containers for paint
  • pot and whisk
  • brushes (optional)
  1. Start by “writing” your child’s name with the painter’s tape on the canvas. The letters don’t have to be perfect and I think it almost looks better if they’re not. Set the canvas aside for when you’re ready to start painting.
  2. Fill the pot with salt and water over medium-low heat. Slowly add the flour while whisking. Whisk until mixture is smooth. You may even need to use a butter knife to loosen the mixture from the whisk. Mine was still quite lumpy but it did not affect the quality of the paint going on the canvas. And I think sifting the flour beforehand would have made the mixture less lumpy.
  3. Divide the mixture into muffin tin or jars evenly.
  4. Start coloring your paint with food coloring by adding a few drops at a time to get the desired color/shade and mix. I used both liquid and gel food coloring and loved how the colors turned out. I was going for a more feminine/pastel look.
  5. Start painting! Have your child explore the paint with their hands and fingers or you can also use paint brushes and just paint right over the painter’s tape.

I spread out a large plastic tablecloth on the floor but you could also do this with your child in a highchair, at the kitchen table, or even outside.

Needless to say, things got a little messy, but we had so much fun. Olivia tried finger painting but preferred the paintbrushes (I think her daddy is wearing off on her). And by the time we finished, we had one really colorful onesie and a masterpiece!

Once the paint dries (it only took about 12 hours for us, but may be longer depending on how thick you put the paint on) then you can carefully peel off the painter’s tape and… voila!

Don’t forget to pick up your all® POWERCORE™ Pacs Oxi or all® POWERCORE™ Pacs Plus Removes Tough Odors from Walmart to help you remove any finger paint stains from your little one’s clothes afterwards. You can find them in the laundry detergent aisle. And be sure to follow the package’s instructions! I love that the small pacs are a combination of liquid and powder, easy to use, not messy, and leave my family’s clothes smelling fresh. But the best part is that I can let Olivia be a kid without having to worry if she’s ruining her clothes or getting dirty. And let’s face it, now that she’s walking, getting dirty is pretty much an every day occurrence.

This looks like a great project for a little one! I have one about that age and think I might give this a try. I’ve found getting paint out of clothing is a tough chore so maybe this is a better alternative!

This is awesome! I’ve put food coloring in baby cereal, but it was quite as paint-like. Will try!

Love this and will definitely be doing it! I have a question though. A friend of mine used food coloring for a toddler friendly activity but said that it stained her kids’ skin. Did that happen at all with Olivia? Thanks friend!
