I feel like I’ve been saying that the ribbon garland tutorial is coming next week for the past three weeks, but finally, it is here! And not only that, but because you’ve so patiently waited for my procrastinating butt, I’ve got a two for one deal today! I’m going to show you two really simple DIYs– the ribbon garland which can be used for party decor or home decor AND a simple birthday high chair banner.

Ribbon Garland Tutorial

What you’ll need:

  • An 8 foot long piece of thin rope/twine/jute (I used plain white rope from Hobby Lobby and I think it looks nicer than twine)
  • Different types of ribbon with varied textures and sizes. The amount of ribbon you need will depend on how long you plan to cut the ribbon. I used two spools of each type of ribbon I bought. (I used 6 different types and also some tulle that I cut into thin strips– all from Hobby Lobby)
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Scissors
  1. First cut your rope. I made my rope 8 feet long but you can make it as short or long as you want depending on where you’ll use it. While the rope is 8 feet long, the length of the actual ribbon section is only 5 feet.
  2. ribbon garlandThen cut your ribbon. Again, you can cut it as long or short as you want depending on your preferences. I cut each piece of ribbon 30″ long. Make sure you cut all the ribbon the same length. I used the pink, mint, gold, burlap, tulle, and then two very thin pieces of white ribbon that aren’t shown here.
  3. ribbonTake your first piece of ribbon and lay it on a flat surface face down underneath the rope. I started about a foot and half in on the rope so that I would have ample space to hang it and you can always trim off excess if you don’t like it.
  4. ribbon garland step 3Take your glue gun and put a thin line of glue on the edge of the ribbon and fold it OVER the rope and glue it to the other side of the ribbon. Try not to get any glue on the rope or else you won’t be able to spread the ribbon out or move it closer together when you’re finished.
  5. ribbon garland tutorial 2Continue this process, always varying the ribbons so as not to make a pattern, as I think it looks best when the ribbon is random. And if you use tulle like I did, you can just tie the end of it to the rope as opposed to gluing it. ribbon and tulle
  6. Once you’re done, you can either spread the ribbons apart or push them closer together for a bunched look, which is what I did. Taadaaaaa!

High Chair Pennant Banner

What you’ll need:

  • 3 burlap pennants (I found these at the Target dollar spot, but I’ve also seen some at JoAnn Fabrics and Hobby Lobby)
  • 3 different pieces of construction paper
  • piece of rope like the one used above
  • hot glue gun
  1. Start by cutting the length of the rope to about 3 feet but you might want to measure it up against your highchair. Then decide which piece of paper you want to use for each of the letters O, N, E.
  2. Then draw an outline of the letters on each piece of paper. I did mine freehand on the back of the construction paper, BUT don’t make the same mistake I did and draw the letter N on the back because when you cut it out it will be backwards like the pic below. 😉 So I just used the backwards N and traced it on the piece if paper.banner letters
  3. Cut each letter out and glue it onto each pennant.
  4. String the rope through the holes of each pennant and then I just used plain ol’ tape to hang it on the highchair. Voila! highchair birthday banner

Okay, what didja think? Cute and pretty simple, right? Do you have any easy DIYs for me to try?
