Cinco de Mayo Blackberry and Basil Lemonade Margarita

May 5, 2016

Happy Cinco de Mayo, friends! In honor of this super-Americanized-and-not-really-celebrated-by-Mexicans holiday, I thought I would bring you a delish margarita recipe. I have to say that the Mexican in me is like why are you celebrating Cinco de Mayo? But the margarita drinker in me is like MARGARITAS, duh!

And in case you don’t know what I’m talking about, we interrupt this regularly scheduled program to bring you a brief history lesson: Cinco de Mayo marks the victory of Mexico over France at the battle of Puebla (a Mexican state) during the Franco-Mexican war. It is not Mexican Independence Day, like many people think and it’s hardly a celebrated holiday in Mexico.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I have a little confession… I have never made a margarita before this. Oh sure, I’ve done the premixed stuff before, but mostly I’m a margarita drinker, not maker. So I phoned a friend. Okay so I phoned like 7 friends, to be exact. And I asked them if they had any margarita recipes that they just looooove and wanted to share with me. Apparently, I’m not the only one that likes to drink and not make, but my aunt and my best friend (hiiii guys!) came through with their fav recipes.

So I took those recipes and added my own pizzaz to it. Now, I don’t know what exactly constitutes a margarita or if this recipe even qualifies. But I highly doubt the margarita police are gonna come looking for me. And I don’t mean to brag, but this margarita (or whatever you want to call it) is the bomb dot com. Like, for reals.

Blackberry and Basil Lemonade Margarita

(Serves about 4)
  • 1 cup blackberries
  • 1 can frozen pink lemonade concentrate (and one can of water)
  • 2 fl oz triple sec
  • 6 fl oz white tequila – I used Sauza Signature Blue (you can always add more!)
  • 10-12 leaves of basil (save a couple for garnish)
  • lemon wedges for garnish (optional)

First, muddle (fancy word for squish) your blackberries in a pitcher. Add lemonade concentrate and water and mix. Stir in triple sec and tequila. Tear basil leaves into mixture and stir to combine. Fill glasses to the top with crushed ice, garnish with lemon wedge/blackberry/basil leaf and serve. Enjoy!
